Hilda G West

Hilda Grace (Wood) West passed away the morning of Friday May 5, 2018 surrounded by her family at her home in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Hilda was born in Centerville, Michigan to Dorothy P. (Crawford) Wood and Percy G. Wood on June 18, 1931. She joined her only sibling, brother George and was raised in Clark Lake, Michigan. There she learned a life long love of God, gardening, and reading. She was proceeded in death by both her parents and her brother George. Hilda married Gary J. West August 25, 1956 and moved to Lake Odessa, Michigan. Gary and Hilda built a home and raised three children Dorla, Kristina, and David. Hilda planted many flowers and trees and enjoyed tending her gardens. While she did work for while in a factory her love was taking care of her home and children. She left the factory to care full time for her husband Gary before his death. Gary passed away in December 1977and Hilda made a career out of caring for others. Hilda took care of many children and eventually became a live-in home health aide for elderly people. While she helped care for many people one of her most notable clients was the mother of Nascar racer Gordon Johncock. Through the years Hilda also took in many other children and offered them a place to call home while they found their way in life. No matter where you found Hilda you could be assured to find an ice-cold glass of tea and a welcoming place to gather and visit. Hilda loved to play games such as dice or Connect Four and she passed that love on to her great-grandchildren. She enjoyed celebrating the holidays with big family gatherings and often could be found to have several grandchildren hanging out at her home. Hilda loved birds and could tell you what bird you were looking at with just a glance. Her favorite bird was the cardinal. Hilda lost her oldest daughter Dorla in July 2011 at which time she relocated to Gulf Shores, Alabama with her oldest granddaughter Jodi and her family. Hilda lived in Gulf Shores for the rest of her life and enjoyed the weather, new birds, and being surrounded by family. Hilda is survived by her daughter Kristina (Stephens) and partner Andrew Eastridge and son David West and partner Lori Root. Hilda’s grandchildren include Jodi (Wood) Smith and husband Steven Smith and Jolene Misner all of Gulf Shores, Alabama. Tonya (Stephens) and husband Dave White and Andrew Eastridge and wife Janelle all of Michigan. Gary West and fiancé Janie Hadley of Indiana. Hilda was proceeded in death by grandsons Jessie Stephens and James Stephens. Hilda’s great-grandchildren include Cody Smith, Shane Smith, Damien Stephens, Dylan Shook, Tara Shook, Ashley White, Alex White, Aubrey White, Ethan West. Hilda was proceeded in death by great-granddaughter Desiree Nummer. Hilda also enjoyed her great-great grandson Bryson Smith-her cupcake partner. A memorial service will be held in Woodland Memorial Park in Woodland, Michigan on Saturday May 12, 2018 at 1:00PM. The family will gather to share memories directly afterwards at the Eagles Club in Woodland, Michigan. A special thank you is due to Spring Hill Hospice care who assisted the family in caring for Hilda and allowed her to spend the remaining months of her life at home in comfort.
