Donald W Horen

Donald William Horen, 91, passed peacefully June 13th., at home in Gulf Shores, Alabama. He was the beloved husband of Marilyn for 66 years, a steadfast anchor in their family. Together they raised three children, a son, Donald Jr., (Chip), of Summerdale, Alabama, and their daughter Kristin of Greenville, SC. Kristin and her husband Ted Decker, have two children, Kaitlin of Pensacola, FL., and Nicholas of Greenville, SC. Chip and Kristi’s brother Andy lives in Marina del Rey, California, with his wife Camila and young daughter Hana Lei. Don’s life was a rich tapestry……born in Toledo, Ohio, he grew up with his three sisters, Mary Jo Horner of Plano,Texas, Marjorie Gilliam of Toledo, and Marcia Hostetter of Marblehead, Massachusetts. The girls always looked up to their big brother and remained close to him throughout the years. Don attended DeVilbiss High School in Toledo and graduated from The University of Toledo. He spent 4 years in the United States Army followed by his first corporate position with AP Parts in Toledo. He was also employed in Fremont, Ohio, Buffalo, New York, and Greenville, SC. He retired from Textron Marine & Land Systems in New Orleans as Vice-President of Operations. He was very excited to be part of the team in the successful development of the Rescue Motor Life Boat for the Coast Guard. Mardi Gras in New Orleans was an annual highlight. Don belonged to the Krewe of Bacchus and celebrated the joy and fun of the floats and beads with many family members, establishing bonds of much happiness. He was an avid tennis player, coached little league football and baseball…..his quiet manner and quick sense of humor endeared him to adults and young people alike. One friend summed up his feelings by saying, “he was one of the good guys”. He had friends all across the country that respected and loved him. You remain in our hearts Don. All of the children and grandchildren were able to gather together for a week in Gulf Shores to share memories and love with “Mimi” and their beloved………”PAPA”. As we think of you Don, we honor and thank God for all of His Creation…….the One Life within each person…….always loving…..forgiving. When we become still and also quietly love and forgive, we can all hear the words echo in our hearts, “You are My Beloved Son / Daughter with whom I Am Well Pleased”.
