Alfred A. Sherman October 3, 1956 – July 24, 2026 Today, we gather to honor and celebrate the life of Alfred Annis Sherman, a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, a loyal brother, a faithful friend, and a true legend in his community. It is difficult to put a life as full and meaningful as his into words. Alfred was not simply a man people knew. He was a man people could count on. He was the kind of person who showed up when someone needed help, worked harder than anyone thought possible, and gave freely of his time, his strength, and his heart. He lived with a servant’s heart. Helping others was not something he did for attention or recognition. It was simply who he was. He fed people who were hungry, cared for those who were struggling, and made room in his heart and home for anyone who needed love or guidance. He raised not only his own children and grandchildren, but also many other children whom he loved and treated as his own. To Alfred, family was not limited to blood. Family was anyone he chose to love, protect, teach, and stand beside. He was legendary in his community because he never met a stranger. People were naturally drawn to him because they knew he was genuine. He could make people laugh, offer wisdom when it was needed, and somehow make everyone feel welcome. Children loved him, adults respected him, and those closest to him knew there was nothing he would not do for the people he loved. Anyone who knew Alfred also knew how much he loved hunting. Hunting was not just something he did, it was one of his greatest passions. It was his outlet, his peaceful place, and a way for him to step away from the worries of life and enjoy the outdoors. He was also one of the luckiest hunters you could ever meet. Somehow, when Alfred went into the woods, it seemed like the deer just knew he was there. But hunting meant much more to him than what he brought home. It was another way he spent time with the people he loved. Some of the best conversations, lessons, laughs, and memories happened on hunting trips, around camp, or while preparing for the next season. It became one of his favorite traditions to pass down to his children, grandchildren, family members, and friends. Through hunting, he taught patience, respect for the land, responsibility, and the importance of simply slowing down and enjoying time together. Those traditions and memories will continue every time someone he loved walks into the woods, sits quietly in a stand, tells one of his hunting stories, or carries forward something he taught them. Alfred was one of the hardest working and most courageous men we will ever know. He believed in taking care of his family, keeping his word, and doing what needed to be done even when it was difficult. He led by example. He showed us what it meant to be strong without losing compassion, to be tough while still being tenderhearted, and to stand firm while also choosing grace, patience, peace, love, and understanding. He is survived by his beloved wife, Valerie Sherman, and their seven living children: Tammy Armond, Sunshyne Amison, Terry White, Jerid Sherman (Amanda), Ginger Chancey, Robert Sherman (Emmily), and Niki Sherman. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his cherished grandchildren: Alexis Haden (Cody), Alfred White, Angel White-Percle (Clifton), Michael Austin Stewart, Alexis Dufrene (Billy), Christopher Short, Ryan Armond, Brandon Sherman, Caitlyn Skaggs (Austin), Levi Sherman, Casey Chancey, Brooklyn Sherman, Jordan Sherman, Cali Lodrigue, Ronnie Chancey Jr., Dalton Sherman, Emily Joshnick, Stormi Sherman, Rosemary Sherman, James Sherman, Paxton Deavers, Abigail Sherman, Kaylie Gertsch and treasured great-grandchildren: Drake, Lacey, Dakota, Sadie Jo, Sawyer, Kennedy, Dawson, Indy Jo, Emmy Lou, OliviaRae, Izabella, Emma, Opal, Griffin, Delilah, Garen, Aveline, Aurora, Aiden, Malia, Holden, and Hunter. He also leaves behind four siblings and their spouses, three brothers-in-law and their spouses, many nieces and nephews, and the many children he raised and loved as his own. He was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow and Armetta Sherman; his mother- and father-in-law, Carl and Carlie Nelson; his son, Brandon Robert Sherman; twelve brothers and sisters; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, family members, and friends. Although there is great sadness in losing him, there is also comfort in knowing that he was welcomed into Heaven by so many people he had missed and loved for so long. I can only imagine the celebration that took place when he arrived—his son, his parents, his brothers and sisters, and all those who went before him waiting with open arms. For more than ten years, Alfred fought a long and difficult battle with cancer. Anyone who knew him knows that he gave it one heck of a fight. He faced every challenge with strength, courage, and determination. Cancer may have weakened his body, but it never defeated his spirit. He remained Alfred until the very end; strong, brave, loving, and surrounded by the people who mattered most. On July 24, 2026, he passed away peacefully at home, just as he wanted. He left this world in the place he loved, surrounded by family and only a few feet from where his life began. There is something deeply meaningful about that. His journey came full circle on the same land that held so much of his life, his family, his memories, his laughter, his work, and his love. Alfred’s absence will be felt in ways we cannot yet fully understand. There will be empty places at family gatherings, stories we will wish we could hear him tell one more time, advice we will long to ask for, and moments when we instinctively reach for the phone before remembering that he is no longer on the other end. There will also be hunting seasons that will never feel quite the same. There will be an empty place at camp, a quietness in the woods, and moments when those who hunted beside him will expect to hear his voice, his laughter, or one of his stories. But perhaps, in the stillness of the woods he loved so much, they will feel close to him again. Men like Alfred do not simply disappear. He will live on in the values he taught us, in the strength he passed down to his children, in the laughter of his grandchildren, in the traditions he began, and in the lives of those he helped. He will live on whenever we feed someone who is hungry, help someone in need, welcome a stranger, forgive someone, work hard, love our families, or take someone we love hunting and pass down the traditions he cherished. The greatest way we can honor Alfred is by continuing the work of his heart. We can love people without judgment. We can choose compassion. We can serve others. We can show up. We can protect our families, make room at our tables for those who need somewhere to belong, and take the time to create memories with the people we love. In accordance with his wishes, a celebration of Alfred’s life will be held at 1pm on August 1, 2026 at Fisherman Baptist Church. He requested a casual gathering focused on sharing happy memories. To honor him, guests are invited to dress in Alabama Football attire, Camo, his favorite color green or simply come as he knew you. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Anchor Cross Cancer Foundation in his name. Your support will help carry forward his legacy of kindness. This world is a much better place because Alfred A. Sherman lived in it. We will carry his love, lessons, strength, traditions, and his legacy with us.
