Alan Thomas Ferdinandsen, age 82, a resident of Foley, AL, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Inez Ferdinandsen, brother, William (Elizabeth) Ferdinandsen and daughter, Nancy (Gary) Cowden. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carolann (Erikson) Ferdinandsen, daughter Amy (Glenn) Jaye, brother Warren (Eileen) Ferdinandsen, grandsons: Jeffrey Schlauder, Sean (Kaitlin) Cowden and Evan Cowden, granddaughter Erica (Steven) Boothe and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. Alan was born in Philadelphia, PA. He moved to Fords, NJ as an infant and remained there until graduating from Woodbridge High School in 1956. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1956, on his 17th birthday. He married his high school sweetheart, Carolann, in 1958. Their first daughter, Nancy, was born in December 1959. Their second daughter, Amy, was born in May 1970. He proudly served in the Navy until retiring in 1979. He started as an enlisted man and made his way to Chief Warrant Office 4 prior to his retirement. Alan was on the crew of the USS Triton when it circumnavigated the world submerged in 1960. He also served sea duty on the USS Bashaw, USS Scamp, USS Orion, USS Halfbeak and USS Jallao and shore duty at Naval Station Great Lakes, IL and Naval Submarine Base, New London, CT. While on active duty, he earned his Associates Degree from Mohegan Community College and his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of New Haven. After retiring from the Navy, he continued working for Control Data Corporation and then McLaughlin Research Company. During this time, Alan also completed his Master’s Degree at the University of New Haven. He then served as an adjunct professor for the University of New Haven, conducting both undergraduate and graduate courses. He retired, the second time, in 2001 and moved to Foley, AL the same year. Alan always gave credit to his wife, Carolann, for his success in home and work. He said that her support and love kept him motivated to do better. He will be remembered fondly as a loving and kind husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Foley, AL, where Alan and Carolann have been parish members since 2001, on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Foley, AL or to any charity that supports those who have served in any U. S. military service.
