John R Summerson III

John, known as Butch to his family, moved to Mobile from CA when he was in high school. He graduated from Davidson High School in Mobile. He reached the highest level in the Boy Scouts of America and became an Eagle Scout at the age of 15. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, IUOE Local 653, for 50+ years. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4328 and a Master Mason with the Masonic Lodge. As a child, he grew up in a traditional family. His father, John R Summerson, Jr., was a retired WWII veteran. John lost his father when he was a teenager to an unexpected medical event. His mother, Lula Frances Summerson (Frances) was in the typist pool during WWII in Honolulu HI, where she met her husband. She loved her husband and children very much. She passed away from cancer when John was in his early 20s. He was married and a father by the age of 21. He loved his 2 daughters, Tammy and Sherry, and 4 grandchildren, Chris, Kyle, Kayla, and Emma, very much. He could be known to brag a little too much about his family. Butch has one younger brother, Joe Summerson. Joe and his wife Heather have always been close to Butch and have shared many special memories together. Uncle John to their son Joey Summerson. John was an avid fisherman, boater, hunter, and a well-known shooter. He competed in shooting contests at local establishments and loved turkey (target) shoots with his grandson Kyle. He was a huge fan of NASCAR and followed specific drivers, but Dale Earnhardt was his all-time favorite driver until his untimely death at the Daytona 500. He loved his Harley Davidson. He had a beautiful Chopper and then later a limited-edition Harley. He rode in Mardi Gras, poker runs, and benefit runs. He truly enjoyed being on his bike. He had many friendships that he valued throughout his life. It would be difficult to list all the people who knew and loved John. He was loved and respected, and many describe him as a "Good Man". John lived his life exactly to his standards. He lived by his own code of how to be a good man and lived by it every day. John will be missed by all! The Celebration of Life service will be held at the VFW Post 4328, 3354 Hamilton Blvd, Theodore on July 31st, 2021, from 2:00-4:30pm. There is a Fish Fry from 12:00-3:00pm that is open to the public.
