James Robert Key

James Robert Key April 15, 1956 – August 15, 2022 James Robert Key passed away the morning of August 15, 2022. He was better known as, “Jim”, “Jimmy”, “Jimbo” to family and friends. Jim was born on April 15, 1956, in Lyons, NY, to Carolyn Thornton and John Alfred Key. He grew up in Spartanburg, SC, Jackson, MS, and Prattville, AL. Jim met his wife Cindy while attending Autauga County High School. They both graduated from The University of Alabama, Jim with a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources and then a Master of Personnel Management from Troy University. On September 16, 1978, Jim and Cindy were married. They lived in Prattville for 6 years and then moved to Gulf Shores where they raised their daughters, Sarah and Julie. Jim was a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and worked in various industries including manufacturing and healthcare throughout his career. Jim and Cindy have been members of Gulf Shores United Methodist church for over 30 years where he was an usher and served on various church committees. Their daughters and Cindy were very active in the children and youth ministries. Jim enjoyed and appreciated the simple things in life. His favorite things were spending time with family, working in the yard, and enjoying the outdoors. His favorite trips were to the mountains, and he felt fortunate to live at the beach. Jim was an avid reader. He was a perfect grandfather to his four grandchildren. He showed his love for them by reading to them, letting them help cook, plant flowers, and just being their “Jimbo”. Jim is survived by his wife of 44 years Cynthia Grouby Key, daughters Sarah Key Cascio (Joseph) and Julie Key Scott (Tyler), and his four grandchildren Frances Elizabeth Cascio, Clara James Cascio, Charlotte Ruth Scott, and James Jackson Scott. He is also survived by his brother John Alfred Key (Susan). The memorial service will be held Friday, August 19, 2022, at Gulf Shores United Methodist Church at 11:00am. Visitation and lunch will follow the service.
