James Dan Gormley

James Daniel (Dan) Gormley of Foley, Alabama passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, April 24, 2026 at Baldwin Health Hospital in Foley. Dan was the son of James Sherman and Katie Irene (Squire) Gormley born on July 11, 1940 in Peoria, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sandra Walker. Dan and Sandy shared July 11th birthdays – exactly one year apart. Dan is survived by his wife, Janice, who he married on August 30, 1997 at Towne Chapel in Groveland, IL. Also surviving are his two daughters, Aindrea (Matthew) Balagna of Pekin, IL, Susanne (Brad) Eckert of Elm Grove, WI, step-daughter, Tricia (Jarod) Tripp of Peoria, Il and step-son, Ryan (Kelly) Brewer of Yates City, IL; four grandchildren Alyson and Kelsie Balagna, Pekin, IL, Morgan and Grace Eckert, Elm Grove, WI and two step-grandchildren Caiden Taylor and Ashlyn Brewer, Yates City, IL and many nieces and nephews. Dan graduated from Limestone High School in Bartonville, IL in1958. He was an active participant in sports – basketball, football, but particularly liked telling the story of his 8th Grade Bartonville Grade School basketball team winning state. Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U. S. Army with training at Ft. Sill, OK on March 19, 1962 then was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington and served many months in South Korea with an Honorable Discharge on December 31, 1964. He loved showing folks a picture of himself at the 38th Parallel marker. After military service, he returned to the Peoria area and began his career at Caterpillar. While working at Caterpillar, he attended Bradley University earning Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees. His 40-year CAT career in service and parts and as account manager through North America Commercial Division (NACD) spanned assignments in Oklahoma, Wyoming, Eastern Canada and the Peoria area. Upon his retirement on August 1, 2002, Dan and Jan decided to head south and enjoy warm weather year-round. They moved to Foley, Alabama in May 2005 and thoroughly enjoyed their retirement life together. Dan loved being outside – nothing made him happier than a good game of golf, going fishing or hunting. He was not one to sit still and was always fixing something, making it better or just keeping busy. A good glass of wine, bourbon or a cold beer always made life good as he was fond of saying. He loved his family and his many dogs over the years and his two cats, Jaxson and Holly. He will be greatly missed, but is in our hearts forever. Funeral arrangements and cremation are being handled by Cason Funeral Service, Foley, AL. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 2 at his residence from 2-5 PM. For Central Illinois friends, a Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. The family asks there be no flowers, but if you care to make a donation to your favorite local animal shelter or your charity of choice, it would be appreciated.
