George Herstek Jr

George has been a resident of Live Oak Village in Foley after retiring here from Michigan in 2003. Beginning in 1955 George began a long in public service. First with the City of Detroit Department of Health at their Receiving Hospital, Rodent Control Division and Business office. In 1964 he than began an extensive career administering in elections beginning with the Detroit Election Commission, responsible for the administration of elections involving approximately 1000 voting precincts and 900,000 registered voters. He rose to the position of Head Clerk, responsible for the day to day operations of the office before moving on to the State of Michigan Bureau of Elections in1972. There he served in several positions in the Bureau, including Election Specialist, Assistant to the Director and for a period of time Director of Elections. He was instrumental in the design and implementation of the process whereby citizens could register to vote when applying for a drivers license at any Secretary of State drivers license office throughout the state beginning in 1976. In 1993, Congress passed the National Voter Registration Act, also known as the Motor Voter Act mandating this procedure in all states. Other accomplishments included the compiling and computerization of the canvass of votes by county, for certification; and gathering and computerizing precinct results for state and federal offices. During his tenure he was also involved in training of election officials, recounts, recalls of elected officials, investigations of alleged election irregularities and legislation. He also assisted the Supreme Court appointed Master to reapportion the state legislative districts for the 1982 election. He also assisted at the meetings of Presidential Electors and the preparation of necessary certifications. After retiring in 1997, he continued to serve as a consultant. He was recognized in both State and Federal courts as an expert witness in the matter of elections. While living in Foley. He had at times, volunteered with Meals On Wheels, South Baldwin Chamber Of Commerce and South Baldwin Regional Medical Center. He is survived by Maureen Herstek, his wife of 43 years. His son Jonathan preceded him in death in 2018. Interment will be private. .
