George J Archibald

George Jolley Archibald, 78, of Gulf Shores, Alabama passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 18, 2024 with his loving wife by his side. George was born February 10, 1946 to the late George Osborne and Elma Jolley Archibald in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended E. L. Connally Elementary School and graduated from Brown High School in 1964 in Atlanta, Georgia. George was a graduate of West Georgia College in 1968 with degrees in psychology and socialogy. After college he joined the U. S. Coast Guard and served during the Vietnam War. George went back to West Georgia College to continue his education program and received his Masters degrees. He was hired by the college as a professor and was the Assistant to the Dean of Education until 1979. In 1976 George married the love of his life and soul mate, Sylvia Carter Archibald and they spent 48 wonderful years together. In 1979 George and Sylvia were accepted as teachers for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools Overseas teaching students of military members stationed in several places in Germany for 24 years and Japan for 2 years. They retired in 2003 to Gulf Shores, Alabama. George and Sylvia traveled extensively around the world especially while working overseas. George enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball especially the Atlanta Braves, cooking, reading, gardening and especially loved his many plants and citrus trees. The outdoors was his home. He loved spending time with family especially his grand-nephews and playing with them. He was one of them. George loved life. Preceding George in death are his parents George and Elma Archibald, his sister JoAnne Archibald Dobbs, niece Marjo Dobbs Arseneau, his father and mother in-laws Harold and Susie Carter, and his brother-in-law Ronald Carter. He is survived by his wife Sylvia; nephew William Walton and his wife Kaci and grand-nephews Kamden, Bexley, Connor, and Weston Walton of Buchanan, Georgia; niece Keri Carter of Sandy Springs, Georgia; nephew Keith Carter and his wife Linda and grand-nephews Tyler and wife Ambree Carter and great-grand nephews Eli and Finn; and grand-nephew Kyle and his wife Katie Carter all of Bremen, Georgia; and many wonderful friends that he called family. George had many friends all around the world. To know George was to love George. He never met a stranger. His kind, happy face touched many lives and hearts of all ages. The children he taught and was a counselor to loved Mr. A. He will be missed by all that knew him. George wanted to be cremated. He said funerals are downers and made people sad. George wanted to be remerbered as the happy, fun loving, positive, cup always overflowing, attitude is everything man that he was and as everyone knew him. He wanted everyone to be happy and celebrate his wonderful life, a life well lived. A Celebration of Life will be planned for George in the late summer or early fall in Georgia where his wife Sylvia will be moving to be near family. Sincere thanks go to those who assisted George on his journey, his oncologist Dr. Curry McEvoy and all his staff at Southern Cancer Center and his gastroenterologist Dr. Matthew Eves and his team and the staff at Thomas Hospital. A special thanks to Coastal Home Care and to St. Joseph Hospice Care in Mobile for the wonderful home care he received, especially his nurse, Meegan McGrew and the many others who cared for him.
