Carrie Bishop Mullen

CARRIE B. MULLEN Carrie (Kay) Bishop was born in Pointville, NJ on December28,1924, to Steadman and Carrie Bishop. She was the 6th of 8 children, but due to early deaths, she became the youngest surviving child. Her mother died when she was 6, and therefore she was raised by her father and her oldest sister, Elizabeth. She said that as children, they grew up believing that their mother was an angel. Kay attended school, which she dearly loved, until 9th grade. She was hospitalized with rheumatic fever and could not return to school to graduate, a great disappointment to her. Kay was a hard worker. Living in a rural agricultural area, she went out into the fields and picked or harvested whatever crop was ready. She also had fun, especially with her sister, Lucy. They were always together and got an apartment together at one time. They were both waitresses. When WWII broke out, Kay wanted to do her part. She went to work at the GI Laundry in Fort Dix, NJ. She moved the heavy bundles of clean laundry into the bins labeled to go back to the various units on base. She was strong and reliable, and she became known as a great asset to the facility. After the war ended, she returned to an easier but no less busier life. One evening when she was at a party with friends, she met Lloyd (Turk) Mullen, who had brought another girl to the event. The next day, he called on her in his brand new Buick, and asked her if she wanted to take a ride. Not long after, they were a steady couple, and eventually they married on November 16, 1948. Her sister Lucy and brother in law Glen Price stood up for them. Kay and Turk moved in with his parents in New Egypt, NJ while construction on their home took place. It was built by Turk over the course of a year and some months. They moved in and shortly thereafter they were blessed with two children, a daughter, Jennifer, followed 2 years later by a son, Jeffrey. Kay eventually settled into a waitressing job for Howard Johnson on the NJ Turnpike. After nearly 20 years, she left that position to become a home health aide. It was at this time that she began studying for her G.E.D. Once she obtained that, she started real estate school. She was a very successful agent, and performed this job for 10 years. Eventually, upon Turk’s retirement from Civilian Federal Service at Fort Dix followed by 10 years of school bus driving, Kay and Turk moved to southern Baldwin Co., AL. Because they had traveled extensively within the continental U.S., they had narrowed down their final destination to Foley. Here they flourished. Kay was always on the go. She was active at her church, Foley First Presbyterian, the Clothes Closet, and Ecumenical Ministries. She would often call on the widowed, the sick and others in need of a kind word or food. She enjoyed making cookies for the Prison Ministry of her church and she was an accomplished quilter. Her New Jersey years were filled with New Egypt Ladies Fire Auxiliary, Cub Scout Den Mother, Head of Ways & Means for PTA, and election official to name a few. Kay leaves behind her daughter, Jennifer Ford ( Foley), and Jeffrey Mullen and his wife, Nancy ( Windsor, S.C.) There are 4 grandchildren: Danielle Ford ( Macon, GA), Brenton Ford ( Newtown, PA), Carrie Ford ( Rushland, PA), and Travis Mullen, ( Spring City, PA). She also has several nieces and nephews. Kay wishes to especially thank her church family, including Heather, Secretary, and her 4th Day group. Donations may be made to the First Foley Church, Berry Ave., Foley, AL 36535. Arrangements are as follows: Wednesday, October 2, 2019 Memorial Service at First Presbyterian Church, Foley, AL at 10 am. An informal repast will follow. Interment will take place at 2:30 pm at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Spanish Fort, AL. Both Kay and Turk will be placed in their final resting place at this time. A Naval Honor Guard Service will take place at the pavilion. Arrangements are entrusted to Cason Funeral Service in Foley Alabama
