Stephen Spencer

Stephen “Steve” Lynn Spencer, 76, of Orange Beach, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Queens, New York on September 22, 1947 to the late Col. Earl W Spencer and Carolyn Sawyer Spencer. Steve aka “Stretch” attended Huntington College as a scholarship basketball player. He served in the Air Force as a weatherman during the Vietnam War. Priding himself on being a family man, he found joy in volunteering as his kid’s sports coach for years at the Hoover Parks and Recreation. Truly known as a man of the finest detail, Steve spent 30 years as a talented builder working in all types of construction. As his children grew up, he loved following their sports careers. Not to be outshined, he competed in the Senior Olympics representing the state of Alabama in 2011, 2013, and 2017. He adored his six grandkids, having special bonds with each. Steve will be remembered as a kind-hearted and generous man who never met a stranger. He was a loving husband, involved father, silliest of granddads, and he will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Janice Green Spencer; two sons, Brad (Melissa) and Scott (Jenn); daughter, Sidney Marlborough (Bryan); Brother, Earl (Delaine); nephew, Jack; and 6 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brother, Greg Spencer (Alison). A special thank you to his doctors for the exceptional care he received over the past 15 months. Dr. John Schaub - Woodlands in Pensacola, Dr. Martin Heslin - UAB in Birmingham, Dr. John Hunter - USA Hospital in Mobile, Dr. Matthew Eves- Thomas Hospital in Fairhope. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 1pm at Orange Beach Methodist Church. A service will be at 2pm with a celebration of life following. A second service will be held at Riverchase United Methodist Church(Hoover, AL) on Saturday, May 18th. Receiving of family and friends will begin at 1pm and the service will be at 2pm with a celebration of life following. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Huntington Men’s Basketball program - Montgomery, AL or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
