Marilyn Moo is my wife I will love her the rest of my life. For thoughtless reasons, I didn’t tell her that each day until the countless times I told her after we learned our time together was limited and the last words of our wedding vows would soon be upon us. I can’t write a true story of her life without saying how much she has been loved and welcomed into my life and the lives of everyone lucky enough to know her as she felt lucky to know them. The constant thought in the notes, cards and calls she’s gotten is the love expressed. Everyone should know she feels exactly the same about them. In a career and life that took her from coast to coast and to islands and oceans far from home, she made and enjoyed other friends in tall buildings at work or on sunny beaches and boats from Santa Catalina to St. Lucia or Tahiti. Marilyn is most comfortable eating bites of watermelon with friends sitting in sand chairs on an island in Perdido Pass or under a cluster of palms on St. John in the Virgin Islands reading a good book. It has been the friends; always the friends, who made her love and value life. We vowed to love each other 42 years ago in a judge’s chambers in Jacksonville, Florida. She molded me to be twice what I would have been without her. Everything I did right was for her. In facing devastating news about our short time remaining, she told me leaving me alone was worse than what was happening to her. Don’t wait for this time in your life to think about how much you love and value your wife or husband. Don’t let it sneak up on you on the day you have no one to call to say you’re on the way home. Marilyn was born in Oklahoma City. She credits her grandfather and her part time job as a television station receptionist for paying her way through college. Retail fashion became her first love. It sounds glamorous to have worked at Macy’s in San Francisco, but it also included flying three time zones away to the garment district of New York. She also made trips to the orient as a buyer where customs of host countries and translators added to the difficult dimensions of her work. Wherever she had to go, everyone knew if Marilyn had twenty dollars and a credit card in her pocket she would be able to find her way safely home. Our careers meant new opportunities in different cities. When job changes came for us, she sold the house and found the new one when she caught up. She loved the changes. She picked the homes and colors and always made our homes friendly and warm. She was always the most beautiful and welcoming feature of every home we chose. In the last weeks, Marilyn got to see many of her friends and most of our family members. She specifically expressed not having a formal service or memorial. One day, her ashes and mine will be in the water near a beach we loved. Instead of mourning her loss, she wants each of us here and her family in Texas, Oklahoma and Florida to remember their best times together and to know how much she loves them too.
