Kenneth E Evans Sr

Kenneth Eugene Evans, Sr, born June 15, 1947, and lovingly known as Gene, Uncle Gene, Dad, and - our favorite name - Pops, joined his mom Ella, dad Ersa Clyde, sister Edith, and second mom Inez in Heaven on Thursday, October 7, 2021, at the age of 74. While his family misses him dearly, we are comforted by the fact that Heaven must have needed him to help throw one wonderful party. Pops never met a stranger, loved get-togethers, and was always the life of any party...and anytime he was with his grand babies, it was a party! On August 26, 1967, Pops married Joanne, affectionately known as Gran. Always the salesman, Pops successfully convinced Gran to renew their contract and remain married for 54 years, joking that it was up for renewal and negotiation each anniversary. In their 54 years together, they shared many adventures. During Pops's stint in the Air Force, they lived in Massachusetts, where Pops shoveled snow off of numerous cars before realizing he'd parked elsewhere, then thankfully, moved to their tropical paradise of Guam. Eventually, they made their way back to Alabama, where they raised their three children, made lots of memories, watched their family grow, and loved each other forever and always. Remaining here to help Gran celebrate Pops and cherish his memory are his children, Kim and favorite son-in-law Tony, Ken and favorite daughter-in-law Crystal, and youngest daughter Jennifer; his grandchildren, Kayla and her husband Kalen, Lauren ("the best birthday present he ever got"), Josh (his "Little Buddy" until Pops became Josh's little buddy), Madison, Hope, Faith, Abby Grace, Harleigh and bonus granddaughter Saydee Jo. Pops was promoted to great grandfather and loved by Cambria Anne, Cooper Kalen, and Cayson Evans Berry. Pops will be missed by his siblings and bonus siblings, numerous nieces and nephews, and more friends than we can count. Pops had roots in Ensley, Alabama, and graduated from Ensley High School. He attended Athens College in Alabama before joining the Air Force and serving during the Vietnam War. After his Air Force days, Pops spent his career with the Birmingham Police Department chasing bad guys, fighting crime, helping others, and trying to make the world a little better for everyone. We still hear from others how he reached out and helped a friend, a friend of a friend, a kid of a friend, or really anyone in need. Once he retired, he enjoyed his time living at the lake in Pell City, Alabama, working various jobs, and spending more time with his family. In recent years, he sold real estate and traded lake life for beach life in Gulf Shores, Alabama, because you just couldn't beat the "location, location, location." Pops loved life, 15-minute naps, and learning about anything and everything. For most of his life, he enjoyed gardening, and his best gardening advice was to stick the plant in the ground, say "Die, dang it" (well, something like that), and walk away. Pops enjoyed history and loved sharing stories he had found while researching his ancestry, and we're sure he is enjoying meeting everyone he learned about while on Earth and sharing all of his jokes and stories of his adventures with a whole new audience. Sometimes Pops liked to take the party on the road, always with Gran, but often with other family and friends in tow as well. Over the years, he shared many camping adventures with a crew of family friends and enjoyed time in nature, or what he called "God's Church." With his kids and grandkids, he shared his love of history in Williamsburg and his love of fun in Disney World. Over the years, he and Gran made frequent trips to their favorite vacation spot in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, which seemed to combine his love of nature and fun, and they shared wonderful memories of many of those trips with family and dear friends. Pops just loved being around people, hearing and telling stories, making memories, and making people smile. Pops also enjoyed cooking and sharing food with his family. His babies and grand babies will always remember his Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck-shaped pancakes, presented with his excellent impression of each character; chocolate gravy with Gran's homemade biscuits; and hotdogs and marshmallows roasted in the fireplace when it was too cold or rainy outside, but he didn't want to disappoint his babies. We'll all miss snack and movie time with our Pops, or as he called it, a party. Pops would want his family and friends to remember the good times, enjoy life, and whenever one of his babies does well, remember that it's all in the Genes!
